In Brazil they are no longer the economic elite, while still being part of the "traditional" political elite.

Colonial old money families are only multimillionaire at best, some of them are technically just upper-middle class. They manage to maintain their relevance by giving each other's positions and handling over the economic elite through red tape and bureaucracy, in a system of self perpetuating nepotism. It only works because the economic elite fell in line which such system in order to have their own interests met through lobbying or try becoming an adjacent of the political elite.
