They didn't have a proper software department like Apple did so they were totally unable to compete and in a small country they had no way of creating one either in a short window so there was no way to compete when the game shifted from hardware to software with smartphones. They tried teaming up with Microsoft because Microsoft is a software company capable of competing with Apple but it didn't work out in the end.
