Drug trade is an ilegitimate multi billion dollar industry. Just as atlantic slave trade was. If you couple that with the desintegration of the nation - state due to the pressure exerted by the global capitalist system, you get an explosive cocktail of private enterprises with their armed groups warring each other to see who becomes the top dog drug supplier.
