you've got a few ways of doing it, lots really but you'll probably hear the following quite a bit, LLPSI (the 1st book) and it's accompanying materials with a grammar book of your choosing, like wheelock. you could also go the cambridge latin course route which is more self contained from what i hear. i've only experience with the former route. /clg/ has links for latin resources, assuming you don't mind digital.

I feel like I’ve hit the point in one of my TLs where drilling isn’t doing much. Reviewing key grammar concepts as needed is worthwhile, but I feel like I’ve hit the point where input is the only real way to get better. Is this the normal progression in language learning? I guess I still need a way to work on output though, but drilling the same stuff over and over feels like spinning my wheels in the mud.

i know there are a lot of italians in germany, how is it the other way around? i know that german boomers, with that "grass is greener" mentality, love warm places, i.e. the mediterranean countries, so i could imagine there are quite some over there (though spain is the more obvious destination). always wondered this, because practically every small town in germany has at least one italian restaurant where everybody only speaks the bare minimum of german. (though i imagine german food might not be very popular in italy, so maybe it's not like that there)

Is there evidence to the idea that Alexander Arguelles talked about a benchmark for polyglots which was that they should learn a classical langauge, a major living language within their cultural sphere, the international language and an language from a culture that is very different from yours and from a different language family? i read about it from a chat gpt prompt and i wanted to know what you think of it.

I think learning ancient Greek, Latin or Sanskrit is rare even inside of language learning communities and many people never learn languages outside of the Indo-European family, im not criticizing these people, i just wanted to see what you think, particularly about learning dead languages and if its something you would do.

Are there examples of people who learned Japanese and Mandarin to a high level both as second languages or is that just a delusional hope/goal to have? clearly there are some japanophile autists and some people who appear to have learned chinese to a high level with a good accent, but has any high profile person done both or is it just 'polyglot' frauds on youtube.

The other day this video appeared in my feed about a man who 'speaks 32 languages'. Who believes ts? https://youtu.be/z8iKZEra5I0?si=apasA038DzNIRQJW

It just takes forever and isn't very practical

In the comments, they're saying his spanish was good but his dutch, chinese, french etc. were p bad and that's from just a few sentences he probably memorized and practiced in isolation.
>>
>>218164940
he talks about that in this video. he doesn't say people "should" do it though, he just gives it as an idea, based on some arguments for 5-6 languages being a solid number to learn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s50CRDTwP-8
keep in mind many of his videos are aimed at people who are basically autistic about learning many languages just for the sake of it (like himself)
>>
>>218165223
I don't think I've ever actually heard Japanese spoken IRL
I hear Spanish every damn day
>>
>>218165122
>Are there examples of people who learned Japanese and Mandarin to a high level both as second languages
I imagine there are thousands of people like this who are diplomats and the like, or who work as tour guides, but just as a hobby? I doubt it.
Probably a good chunk of people too who have a wife in one of said countries and decided to learn the other one just as the next language and a vacation country.
>Is it just polyglot frauds on youtube?
Mostly this because you're talking about something with an extremely high skill requirement so most people will be frauds faking it, it takes a highly dedicated person to do something like this - abnormal circumstances usually.

let's not be retarded, I could grant the argument for any one of those languages vs japanese alone but combined it's no contest. fwiw I really like JP film and related art especially w/r/t horror but come on, I think even english would be tough to argue for vs all of those massively-represented languages *combined*

Even if Japanese speakers are concentrated in the island of Japan, they are smarter, more civilized and they have a greater cultural output, plus you would unlock 3 new writing systems.

Hiragana and Katakana are really pretty, plus Japan has car companies and tech companies like nintendo, as i said videogames and movies, in case youre not into anime.

There is a lot to be learned from Japanese culture, not so much from latino culture i think.

My ancestors decided Poland sucked so they moved here lmao
>>
>>218165361
Well Poland used to be poor due to communism but now its a high income economy with universal healthcare and yeah prejudice towards Americans is still something i disagree with, particularly because many people try to portray a pragmatic choice as something they did out of virtue.

They speak English because they were forced to learn it, but they act as if Americans are ignorant for not attempting to learn a second language even though its unpractical and many ESLs never learn a language after English, proving they have the same attitude of having little curiosity in foreign cultures and that they are only making pragmatic choices.

They also try to act like they are smart for learning a language with a high degree of similarity to theirs even though 90% of them would not know or could not learn another language from scratch.

i know that tyrol is pretty unique and country borders don't matter much there, tyrol is tyrol, besides that, idk. there is an italian part of switzerland, so obviously there is overlap there, but i kind of doubt that austria, besides tyrol, has that much to do or in common with italy culturally. just wondered if there is noticeable immigration. looking at the numbers on wikipedia, there are some 36k germans in italy, but, get this, 644k italians in germany.
i guess that kind of answers it. i am kind of surprised at the numbers but also not really. i didn't expect they make up such a substantial part of our demographics.
also wondering what compells these italians to come here. their economic prosperity can hardly be much worse, and culturally, i doubt they care for us. in my head it makes more sense for a german to move to italy than the other way around...

Everyone who is serious about world literature and philology ought to learn these languages, but for normies and normie polyglots who like traveling and speaking to people it makes no sense (and Arguelles says this).
The 6 language benchmark is also the point where you've mastered the process of learning languages, where learning languages is no longer a challenge for you. I've learned 6+ languages following his advice for years and now Chinese, Arabic, Russian are not at all intimidating

Depends how much you care about the "polyglot" label. My thought process is that I want to know in order:
>English
(native language and most useful global language)

>Japanese
(Already N3. completely foreign language that I'm interested in with lots of media. Economic power. 2nd most important in Asia)

>French
(2nd most global language. One of the most spoken globally. One of the main powers in Europe. Lots of media, including old literature. Women find it sexy and refined. Useful for travel. Similar to English and makes you a better English speaker)

>Spanish
(2nd most useful language in the US. Should be pretty easy after learning French. Useful for travel and maybe impressing hot latinas. Moderate amount of quality media)

If I manage to learn all of those and am not tired of learning languages, then maybe I'll consider:
>German
>Russian (sounds cool, lots of speakers, want to understand Soviet media)
>Polish (Poland seems nice to visit. And I love Polish food. My part of the US had some Polish immigrants long ago)
>Latin/Ancient Greek
>Chinese

Ok but Russia is not comparable to the other case studies, chechens and tatars live in their ancestral land and they have also sought independence from Russia. Russia degrades them and hates them but wants to keep their territory annexed. Russia does have a little over 10 million immigrants, but chechens and tatars are not immigrant groups

Language choice is mostly down to personal taste, but there are "tiers" and some languages are just more worthwhile in my opinion because they have more content, more resources, more opportunity to do something fun with it. In theory you could have fun with some meme dogshit like Basque but you'd really have to go out of your way to find enough compelling content to keep you going beyond the beginner stage.

Honestly any language over a million speakers has enough content that you'll never run out of enjoyable content to consume, especially languages that are institutionalized. Like I bet there is enough Estonian content that a learner will never run out of it.

Compared to Spanish (1729 channels, ~2.6mil books), French (505 channels, ~2.5mil books), German (321 channels, ~2.4mil books) - it's clear that you have a lot more variety and options, which means higher chance of having fun.

Human relations have in its origin a purely utilitarian motive. Where one agent seek to obtain an objective goal which would maximize his utility, therefore happiness. There are thousands of words that had their forms and readings loaned directly from Classical Chinese over the course of hundreds of years and also thousands of compounds that were derived in Japan that use Sino-Japanese readings, this is why kanji have kun'yomi (native japanese) and on'yomi (loaned chinese) readings
Nowadays the Mandarin and Japanese readings are mutually unintelligible because both languages have underwent significant sound changes since Middle Chinese and Middle Japanese
For example, MC 兄 xjwaeng was loaned as kwiyau since go'on loans rendered -eng as -u and [h] had to be substituted with [k] due to it not existing in the language at the time, then it turned into kyau after Middle Japanese lost /wi/ and finally became kyou in Modern Japanese, while in Mandarin it became xiong1
Chinese loans in Japanese are similar to the Latin/Romance loans in English, albeit the loans in English happened like 200-500 years later, in both cases the modern pronunciation became unrecognisable and only the definition/meaning remained intact
Also keep in mind that Japanese kanji underwent simplification independently of Chinese and some characters and terms fell into disuse in modern Chinese

Here is where things get weird.

"me" in this case is the indirect object, basically when you say " I like penis" in English, Penis is the indirect object and you are the direct object. In Spanish is the other way around

>No me gusta la salsa
We use "gusta" because this is in the third person. Keep this phrase in your mind because it's really common

>I don't like this restaurant
>No me gusta este restaurante
>I don't like faggots
>No me gustan los gays/homosexuales/maricas
(here you have to make it plural - gustan - because you are using nouns in the plural form)

If you are a native speaker in that language, then yes. If you're learning it as a hobby, it's a red flag to women, unless it's a particularly popular language or one beloved by women (Spanish, French, English, maybe Italian? Maybe Korean for quirky girls?) Everything else gives the ick. Furthermore playing an instrument only counts if it's an acoustic/electric guitar, piano, maybe a standard set of drums? If you so much as touch a harp or accordion or an ethnic instrument you are doomed to virginity.

Its not the languages themselves that are the ick, its the assumed reason as to why you are learning it (which in the case of most Japanese and Thai learners for instance, is true).

Parisians are cunts to everyone, they're the equivalent of New Yorkers or Londoners.
Medium cities like Rennes are much nicer to visit and you'll get to use the language as long as you can show you understand the people there.

I refuse to learn french.
It’s a shit language
>>
Question :
Which Uralic or finno ugric language makes sense to learn, honestly ? Hungarian, Finnish ? Well Hungarian doesn’t have two separate languages but it’s still wild.
>>
I can't speak English good. I don't know what to do. Yes, I can write some texts, messages, posts etc. but it's not enough.
Ok. I'm not going to waste your time and I'll make a list of problems.
>very simple texts
>poor lexicon
>my speeches are awkward (khello, hello my friends. What do you do?)
>awful grammar (them instead of they(yes, there can be found an excuse that natives can do it but it doesn't work here))

Just read more and watch movies/series while imitating the characters.
>>
I’m pretty fluent in my TL, but I still have a noticeable accent. Is it too late for me to sound more native?

Most of those problems can be solved by reading more and then trying to use the vocabulary/grammar yourself.

Pretty good recommendations. It depends what school you go to but I remember liking 1984 and Of Mice and Men.

If you need something easier, I remember reading Skeleton Man (picrel) in middle school. Or the Goosebumps books.

If you want something more difficult and poetic, anything by Edgar Allan Poe is good. I had to read The Pit and the Pendulum in school.

I found Tell-Tale Heart to be an easier read.

Same problem. I started reading Harry Potter aloud with the audiobook in the background. Mainly for practicing my pronunciation, which is terrible, but I'm also starting to expand my active vocabulary (my next problem is that I understand more than I can say), I guess.

This but Spanish. I’m sorry, I just can’t do it.

Estonian. Only Uralic language speaking nation worth moving to.

Besides Spanish, is there a language for us burgers to learn that’s not absolutely useless?

Scottish Gaelic.
Thank me later.

Thank you too. I try to read all these books.

Listen to the Language Transfer audio tapes. Honestly, it'll give you such a great base level to start from.

>>218201532
How so ? And why not Finnish or Hungarian ?

You mean to tell me English roses aren’t hot?
>>
>>218201807
Hungary is full of Romanians and their current leader is a dickhead (information I have gathered from talking to Hungarians in the UK).
Finland is Finland.
Estonia is epic.
Thats about it really.
>>
>>218201860
No. Don't come here looking for a wife. These wenches are clapped.
>>
>>218201896
Which UK country has the finest roses now? England, Wales, Scotland, or NI?
>>
>>218200926
with those languages it just depends on what country you're interested in.
I like the idea of reading the Kalevala in Finnish but I don't know anything about Hungarian literature
>>
>>218200173
most likely the resources in your native language are way worse than the ones in english, unless your native language and your TL are closely associated for whatever reasons
>>
>>218202224
I see
I only like Finnish music, and for some reason I have some online friends from there. I only like how Hungarian sounds. Both countries are a bit depressing. I also don’t really know any Hungarian authors to be honest… both are extremely extremely hardcore.
>>
>>218202863
Do you not like Hungarian music? There’s some good historical stuff if you want to check it out:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeGkSHGjAfOZpdVA7QNagW3Z7JNwdLT9q&si=UOJPsCklEv7SHzxn
You can ignore some of the Slovak stuff in there, but it’s good too.
>>
>>218202023
None. The roses are all shite.

Spanish comprehensible input youtube channels?

I will personally always discourage blindly following any method with the hope of future returns. I believe in only doing things that offer quick results.

Depends on where you live. Where I live there are plenty of Russian, Chinese, and Arabic communities.

I'm already fed up with German, and it's only the fifth day. I wanted to emigrate to Germany and I like the language, but everything is going so slowly, and I get the impression that they are more Americanized than the rest, they don't produce that much content compared to other Germanic languages. LatAm gave me a similar impression, but Germans are wealthier financially and culturally, so they should do interesting and original things. Unironically, Germans are better promoted by the British (Warhammer) and the Japanese (anime), and I'm not just talking about Nazi references here. The Germans even removed the second verse of their anthem so that no one would think they were made of flesh and blood.
I'm considering spending money on Babbel or some kind of evening language school.

You very likely won't study 8 hours a day but if you could yes you'd be fluent within a year
>>
>>218199156
I'm just kinda dabbling right now and using Duolingo for it. I've taken Russian years ago as my second foreign language so I'm not completely new. Currently I'm trying to recover the vocab before moving to Anki and inputting.

>Hungary is full of Romanians
What's wrong with that?
>>
>>218202921
Are you learning it ?
>>
>>218205427
No, I dabbled in it a little bit to see what it was like. Maybe one day I’ll return to it, but probably not. I just really like historical music from different countries.
>>
>>218205486
Cool… what else have you learned ? I guess eesti as well maybe
>>
>>218205594
Language wise? Not much honestly and I’ve never learned Estonian. They’ve got really good historical music though:

It’s a beautiful language with beautiful music, similarly to Finnish for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the cultural input <3

For now it’s Estonian or Hungarian , lot of homework to do. Hungarian might be more me since it’s harder
