Northeast Brazil used to be cut by multiple passenger and cargo railways, every major city in the coast was connected to each other and most states had connections to their inland. A lot of those railway lines were built by british companies in the late 1800's and nationalized under Vargas in the 1940's. They continued operation untill the 1990's under the Rede Ferroviaria do Nordeste, a state-run railway company subjected to the Brazilian Federal Rail Co. (RFFSA). The rail network was sold for less than a quarter of the evaluated worth, then sistematly abandoned or scraped by its private controler, the TLSA.
Since the 2000's the TLSA scams the federal government by pretending to build a new modern railway network that will replace the ones they left to rot, always extending the deadline and being granted more and more money.

Idk about the rest of the country.

No passenger services at all?.
>>
>>218759387
Only metropolitan rail, like trams and metro in some of the cities.
Because those were granted to the CBTU rather than the TLSA, otherwise would probably been gone aswell

The locomotives are changing along the way usually.
