This is always a problem with american recipes. The other day I was baking a chocolate cake, and the recipe (random american one since I like to try new ones) called for roughly 950g of sugar. Naturally I used much less, but despite that it was still sweet enough that I had no desire to eat more than a single slice in a sitting. A normal sponge cake uses roughly a similar volume of eggs to sugar. This was more than double, plus the frosting which was supposed to have even more sugar than the cake itself.
