The quick of it is that “American” has become a meaningless term. It provides nothing to root an identity in. And, whether you like it or not, having some sort of tribe to root your most basic sense of self in is important. White American is a better term but it is still diverse and necessarily requires looking back and understanding your ancestry. That’s one reason why so many Americans are ancestry obsessed. But looking back and finding a bunch of different ancestries that have nothing to do with each other doesn’t quite solve the problem. It’s not easily followable or cohesive. You never have to worry about this because you’re mere Finnish—always have been and nothing else needs to be considered. This is a very autistic way of explaining this phenomenon, but it’s something deeply engrained the people here and every American does these mental calculations to supply the most fundamental blocks for their identity because, ultimately, the melting pot failed.
