>>218791083the mystery works because it withholds the right things the town the creature and the rules are never explained outright and that restraint creates real tension especially in the childhood sections where fear comes from isolation weather and silence rather than action the attic scene and the erased town rumor are genuinely effective and linger longer than the events themselves which is what good horror mystery should do, the suspense weakens when the same emotional beat repeats unease growling hesitation nothing happens too often and the narrator explains fear instead of letting decisions and consequences show it this flattens escalation and trains the reader to expect delays rather than danger tightening these sections and forcing each strange moment to change the situation would sharpen the pressure considerably, overall it feels like a strong gothic horror draft with a solid spine atmosphere and intent the ideas are better than the execution but the execution is fixable with cuts focus and escalation it has the bones of a compelling mystery rather than empty ambiguity and with revision it could stand alongside modern slow burn horror rather than feeling like a promising experiment
