Idk, the thing with Rome is that even Julius Caesar, who was the first emperor, rose to the throne through a civil war, not through a legitimate process, effectively staging a coup. He took part in creating a culture whereby if You didnt like the current people in power, You could just kill them. So this became a habit for Rome and You can say many things about the United states, but so far, none of their presidents have become dictators for life or won the presidency through a coup or a civil war.

That was already happening before Caesar took power, the optimates were killing political enemies left and right, before Caesar there were populares reformists and they got killed, so Caesar answered with the same coin. By the time of Caesar the Senate was hopelessly corrupt, a plutocracy with no qualms resorting to violence to protect their privileges

The empire started with Augustus thoughbeit. Caesar was just considered Sulla 2 in his time.
