Continents are not a clear system. When the Greeks came up with the concept they thought the Black Sea extended north enough that Asia and Europe were separated by the sea. But after a while the idea of them being separate continents stuck. America was discovered as a single continent, they knew it as the New World or the West Indies before the name of America stuck. The only reason Yanks pretend these are different continents is because of the demonym they decided to give themselves.
