>France sells the Louisiana Territory for $15 million (about $380 million today)
>the GDP of the Louisiana Territory was $256 billion in 2024
Why did they agree to this deal lol
>>
Why shaped like that
>>
>>218820015
France didn't have the population or manpower to hold it.
>>
Louisiana didn't have enough bbcs to be compeling to french sensibilities.
>>
>>218820015
Because Napoleon didnt have money to keep this garbage and Haiti was much more important to France

Its just Shitmerica nowadays spending more in its debts than with its useless army
>>
>>218820015
The USA would have taken it by force and for free later
>>
>>218820015
This killed Mexico
>>
>>218820051
the rough borders were the Mississippi river and Rocky Mountains
>>
Because it was not profitable except for New Orleans and indefensible
>>
He knew that at some point either the British or us were just going to walk in and take it and he decided it'd be better to just give it to us and get some money out of the deal
>>
Napoleon couldn't even pacify Haiti, how tf he gonna hold 1/3rd of North America?
>>
>>218820051
I think it's cause this is the Great Plains I guess, easily accessible territory
>>
In 1763 at the end of the Seven Years War, the British offered France a choice in peace negotiations: They could either keep Guadeloupe (small sugar plantation island ~5% the size of Haiti) or all of Quebec (which at the time was not just the modern Canadian province but also most of Ontario, New Brunswick, and the US Midwest)

The French delegation, upon realizing the British were serious and not just fucking with them by offering such an incredibly obvious and one-sided choice, quickly chose Guadeloupe before the British wizened up and changed their minds.

>and Haiti was much more important to France

Napoleon couldn't effectively assert control over France's colonies and on a long enough timescale America would have just taken it anyway. Revolutionary France needed money more than clay

>>218820051
it's the western half of the Mississippi River basin
>>

Goddamn, the french wasted every opportunity to create a son country.

Sugar was more valuable than beaver pelts. Simple as really

the only europeans in louisiana were in the south. everything else was either empty or populated by indians.
a giant territory, yes, but 0 control over it. france sold a nominal claim
>>
>>218820015
because they just conquered it off Spain and were about to lose it anyway
>>
>>218820511
Just admit the lack of foresight. Is temporary money more important than spreading your genes and influence around the world?
>>
>>218820015
It is even worst for us. Spain also owned that area (Louisiana) plus all the west (including California, Texas, etc) plus Florida, etc.

In fact, we sold Florida in 1850 for a small amount. Florida has been more time Spanish than unitedstatian.

>>218820085
>Haiti was much more important to France
one of the worst deals ever
>>
>>218820015
Frencheoids were always surrender cucks. They knew they didn't have the favstianism required to keep it so they tried to at least make a little a bank from the purchase
Could you ever imagine a country like Germany, Portugal or the UK giving up that much land so easily?
>>
>>218820015
Napoleon was the champion of the freedom of the peoples and gave freedom to the american peoples

>>218820015
Doesn't California alone have 10 times more GDP than all of them?
>>
>>218821432
>t. not a serious country

France couldn't get settlers to the new world because life was still pretty good in France, partly due to the fact the demographic transition had started mid 18th century, a century earlier than elsewhere in Europe. This is why there wasn't any successful french population colony.
Québec couldn't sustain an all white population so the french administration tried to get most of the native on their side and created the Metis people. In New Caledonia the white population would never be the majority. In Algeria a good percentage of "french" colons were fresh immigrants that were settled in Algeria in exchange for citizenship, and displaced people from Alsace-Lorraine.

If we didn't do it, you would have taken it by force. We wouldn't be able to defend it.

Also we sold it because we looked for a powerful friend since all the countries in Europe hate us.
>>
Americans owe their life and soul to French generosity
>>

How did Florida become a state in 1845 if Spain still owned it?
