Commies put a lot of emphasis on these fake Olympiads because they were one of the few areas where they could compete with the West on equal footing. You see that mentality a lot in communist countries >well maybe we have shortages of basic products but at least we produce many chess grandmasters and win the math olympiad TAVAAAARISSSCHHHThese Olympiads were first organized after WW2 as an equivalent of actual Olympiads in sports and they had the same globohomo ideology attached to them. The problems you encounter in them are entirely fake and have little to do with actual research mathematics, I doubt actual mathematical geniuses like Hilbert or Gödel could pass even the elimination stage. It also accounts for the fact that people who succeed in them rarely go on to become good research mathematicians (Terry Tao is an exception). It's also why any math undergrad can name tens of theorems named after German mathematicians but not a single one named after a Romanian, Bulgarian or Polish one even though the results of the IMO would lead you to believe Germans are mathlets
