>>218865744I've read a little about Silicon Saxony and the DDR's tech efforts. Honecker's last public appearance before he got hospitalised for months from August '89, which meant he couldn't respond to any of the protests, was to inspect the first 32-bit chip. It's where that famous "weder Ochs noch Esel" thing came from.I recall a story about the Stasi setting up a front company to smuggle an entire hard drive factory but looking now I struggle to find it. Maybe hallucinated that.

Btw, Wessis have done their utmost to sabotage us since '90.They always feared what is happening now.>Und doch: Fast hätte man auch Dresden „ideologisch kaputt gemacht“, wie Junghans sagt.

>>218866262Nah, did Bismarck exploit the Wessis when he created the German Empire? No, he properly integrated them into the whole and as a result the whole nation got rich.Wessis did the opposite, but where will revenge get us?They are now reaping the grapes of wrath. It's obvious their politics weren't sustainable and they are now facing poverty themselves. That is enough.Rather, if the tables truly turn, we should lead by example and show to the world that a different approach is possible.
>>218866242They planned to export the chip? No, Siemens legally acquired the technical documentation from Toshiba (nothing unusual there, western companies acquire intellectual property from one another all the time, one of the reasons why the GDR lacked behind so much, because they couldn't just do tat).Stasi members then got their hands on said documentation. But it was useless, because the GDR didn't have the means to copy the manufacturing process used in Japan.Hell, even Siemens was unable to do that themselves. The English article is basically empty.
>>218866106It's pretty funny that one of the reasons West German car manufacturers face such hardships now is the lack of domestic semiconductors. Some of the the specialists in the GDR even moved to Austria because the FRG was just not interested, which clearly backfired hard. It's probably the world's most important industry right now.>Moving to the microelectronic industry, he led the Engineering Department of ams AG and later the Strategic Product Development from 1990 to 2003, and in 2003 co-founded SensorDynamics AG an Austrian semiconductor companyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volker_KempeSee this as well: >>218866154They purposefully shut down semiconductor companies in Dresden for no reason other than spite.
>>218866887Well wouldn't be the first time, they shot themself into the foot. Germany used to be a leader in nuclear technology and science and we gave it all away, because some people thought it was vewy scawy.
>>218867215Certainly. Btw before anyone takes the stuff I say out of context again: I'm NOT claiming that the GDR was a global leader in semiconductor technology, that was clearly Japan, the GDR being behind the west by several years. However, because the GDR was unable to simple buy the intellectual property from the Japanese they had to research a lot of this stuff themselves which led to novel approaches and experience in the semiconductor field.Clearly the Austrians didn't just make a GDR scientists the head of ams AG's Engineering Department for no reason. What I'm saying is that there was potential, which largely remained untapped.Yes, Dresden might be one of the if not the center for European semiconductors, but it's child's play compared to what the Taiwanese are doing.
>>218865744yeahööö
>>218867529It's definitely sad to think about what could have been, especially since it was our thing, an East German thing. It's nice that opportunities return to the east with the arrival of TSMC and Tesla, but I would love to see some local companies brining those opportunities. Right now we mostly make money for western companies.
