I think they made Christianity illegal because it would disrupt the political order and traditions of Japan. they killed people for being Christians. That and protestantism in Europe are just examples of politicians using religion to their convenience and people just eating it up. Religion feels authentic to these people, but the only reason why they are not catholic is because the politicians in their countries didnt think it was convenient.
