Lettuce and onions are an absolute necessity on a cheeseburger. Gherkins are hit-and-miss, depending on how pickled they are. Tomatoes are good if they're firmer and hold some of their shape, rather than being soft and disintegrating (though I can see why some enjoy them acting as a kind of semi-sauce due to their juiciness)
