Should I visit Cape Town or would I regret my decision

Avoid cape flats neighborhoods and you will be fine, stay in touristy areas. Get a hotel in Camps Bay and you will have fun and be safe.

what if i want to drive along the coast, like north toward Namibia. Are the towns in-between nice or dangerous

The N7 towards Namibia is a really different vibe from Cape Town there's not really any gang turf nigger stuff going on, most of it is small fishing and farming towns. You should still only drive in the daylight and get to where you are staying before sunset if you can and do not leave anything in your car that you care about losing.
