Can any Americans help me with my Americology studies?

I am trying to understand the distinction between a sandwich and a burger.. however different sources present varying interpretations.

While we are at it, is forks simply the plural form of fork or does the form change depending on the specific quantity, such as fork(1), tworks(2), throok(3), fourk(4)?
