Despite higher inflation, the eastern German states showed significantly better real wage growth than their western counterparts between 2020 and 2024. Thuringia led the way with an increase of 3.6 percentage points, followed by Berlin (+2.6) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (+2.5). Brandenburg (+1.7), Saxony-Anhalt (+1.4), and Saxony (+1.3) also saw positive results.Most western German states, however, recorded negative figures: Bremen brought up the rear with a decrease of 3.9 percentage points. Lower Saxony (-2.5), Baden-Württemberg (-2.4), North Rhine-Westphalia (-2.3), and Bavaria (-1.7) also experienced significant declines. The nationwide average was a decrease of 1.1 percentage points – meaning wages failed to keep pace with inflation.
