DJT is a language learning thread for those studying the Japanese language.
Japanese speakers learning English are welcome, too.

Read the guide linked below before asking how to learn Japanese:

what is the religion of Japan like ?
comparisons from ancient times to modern times any changes ?
>>
>>219434649
Even though it's ancient, things change over time.

When Buddhism was introduced, there was a civil war between conservatives and reformists.

Since then, people have kind of accepted the idea that it's okay to mix religions, so I don't think things have changed much since ancient times.

Our governmaent tried to weaken Buddhism and push Shintoism instead but failed and our main religion is still either one of them
Abrahamic religions are thriving due to hefty influx of foreigners these days but their religions are still niche among Japanese

It was an ancient Indian religion, but it lost out to Hinduism in India and flourished in other countries, so it's become quite a different thing.

In Japan, some people were unhappy with the idea of importing Buddhism from a foreign country rather than adopting an ancient religion, which led to a war. Ultimately, the proponents of Buddhism won, so it was accepted as a religion, and both religions naturally existed.

As for the teachings of Buddhism...to be honest, it's impossible to summarise them succinctly, as interpretations changed in each country where the teachings were introduced, resulting in religious sects.

In India, the founder of Buddhism, a prince at the time, summarized concepts like human salvation and reincarnation into a religion.

For Japanese fellows, do you personally feel connected to shintoism, buddhism, undecided, or something else?
In the UK, christianity is built into our architecture and schools, to the point that we did bible study and sang christian songs at the local church when I was a child. So I feel a natural association with it and its motifs even though I'm not christian myself.

I'm not religious so much, but I feel most familiar with shintoism when I visit the local shrine on 1st January to pray for good fortune of the new year and draw おみくじ.
As a side note, おみくじ (rarely written 御神籤 in kanji) are sacred lots that predict how good the new year will be for you.
Everyone can draw the lots for a small amount of money (approximately 100 to 300 yen) at many shrines.

"as" is optional there, I'm not sure why. No difference in meaning.

Thanks for your perspective, it's interesting to keep a yearly tradition like that.

I got it, thank you!

If you don't mind me asking a question, is "as" optional in the following cases?

>Yamada is usually spelled as 山田 in kanji.
>Germany is pronounced as "juh muh nee."

>is it possible to learn japanese kanji without learning old chinese first?
It is.

>do native japanese kids just memorize all the arbitrary components
Native Japanese kids after starting school are usually taught kana first and how to write their own names in hiragana.
After mastering kana, they learn how to read and write basic 80 kanji (pic related) one by one.
They already know how to speak Japanese through daily conversation, so they can easily associate kanji with its readings.
However, they need to hammer kanji into their heads by handwriting repeatedly.
In my elementary school, students were forced to take a kanji quiz every week to check if they can read and write kanji correctly.
It was such a pain in the butt.

In Japan, today is an annual public holiday due to the birthday of the reigning emperor (徳仁天皇 / Emperor Naruhito).
He was born on 23 February 1960, so he turned 66 today.
Tens of thousands of people gather at the imperial palace for his birthday celebrations every year.
Most of the attendees consist of Japanese adults and elderly people, but there are also groups of foreign tourists who visit there.
To be honest, I have no idea what attracts some foreign tourists to the ceremony though.
