DJT is a language learning thread for those studying the Japanese language.
Japanese speakers learning English are welcome, too.

Read the guide linked below before asking how to learn Japanese:

Would you like to say "I hurt my hand while shovelling snow" in Japanese?
If so, I'd say:
>雪かきをしていたら手を怪我した
>雪かきをしていたら手に怪我をした
>雪かきしている時に手を怪我した
>雪かきしている時に手に怪我をした
>雪かきの最中に手を怪我した
etc.

Sorry if my corrections are unwanted or unnecessary.

I appreciate a lot.
Try to say something -> get correct sentence if its not good.
That's learning language, isn't it.

Yeah, you're right.
I have a bad habit of adding "sorry if blah blah blah" at the end when correcting Japanese learners in order to avoid making them mad or offended.

している is in the middle of doing something, and していたら is in the middle of doing something in the past?
I'm shoveling Vs. While I was shoveling?

>I'm shoveling Vs. While I was shoveling?
Exactly.
XしていたらYした expresses that an event (=Y) happened while (you were) doing X.
As a side note, when you attach a verb to the ら form, you always need to change it to the past tense no matter whether an event happened in the past or not.

>公園を散歩していたら、友人と会った。
>I ran into my friend while (I was) walking in the park.

>遅くまで起きていたら、母さんが怒る。
>My mom gets mad if I stay up.

When it comes to Xしている時にYした vs Xしていた時にYした, either is fine and there's no difference in meaning between the two.
>公園を散歩している時に、友人と会った = 公園を散歩していた時に、友人と会った

It's starting to make sense...
One of the many nuances of a language that you figure out as you recognize them out in the wild more, I think.
Thanks!
