You see this happen to most outside religions that take or took hold here. They became mellow and laidback, more about your inner spiritual self than wars or politics. E.g., Compare Bali Hindus to Jeet Hindus, or our Islam vs Wahabbis or Shiites. We lead the Muslim world in science and commerce. Real commerce, not simply selling oil to Gringos.

With the rise of Modern Islam - and the demand for a more "pure" or "orthodox" form of worship, Traditional Islam as you describe will fall out of favor within our lifetimes.And Muslims in SEA being "laid back" when it comes to their piety isn't a special SEA thing since such characteristics can also be found in places where Sufis did most of the heavy evangelical lifting like in India and Africa.
