Mexicans, if they want to cross ilegally, they only have to pay one human smuggler, whereas south Americans would have to pay human smugglers to help them cross the Darien gap and then the Mexico-U.S. border and then the journey lasts a lot more, many months. Alternatively they could overstay a visa, but that way they will be in the American database and if they move ilegally, they are not registered in any system.
