I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as the 'Ayatollah,’ is, in fact, the Supreme Leader of Iran, or, as Middle East scholars prefer to call it, the Supreme Leader plus the title of 'Ayatollah'. The title ‘Ayatollah’ is not a position unto itself, but rather a religious rank within Shia Islam that can be held by various clerics. The Supreme Leader, however, is a political title that carries the ultimate authority in Iran’s political system, made powerful by the military, the Guardian Council, the media, and the vital governmental institutions that comprise the full structure of the Islamic Republic. Many people, both within and outside of Iran, confuse the title ‘Ayatollah’ with the position of Supreme Leader, not realizing that while the Supreme Leader must hold significant religious authority, it’s the political position that defines the role. Through a peculiar turn of events, the title ‘Ayatollah’ is often used interchangeably with ‘Supreme Leader,’ and many are not aware that it is essentially the leadership of Iran, formed by the leadership of the Islamic Revolution. There is, in fact, a position of Supreme Leader, and this is what people are following. However, it’s important to note that the title ‘Ayatollah’ is not the defining aspect of this leadership. The Ayatollah is merely the religious rank that some Supreme Leaders hold. The Supreme Leader has the final say in all major decisions; religious, political, military, and otherwise. The title of Ayatollah is a part of this system, but not the whole system. The leadership of Iran is essentially the Supreme Leader plus the role of Ayatollah, or as we should more properly call it, the Islamic Republic of Iran.
