They were already the established skilled working class in the northeast when the middle class became a thing and have had generational wealth since then and are now pretty common in the high income bracket. Basically1- Pre-1861 AKA before the Civil war they were the absolute lowest mass migrant group and were doubly hated because most here were Catholic and used as disposable labor2-After the Civil War to about the 1900s or so, they started becoming commonly seen as tradies, police, and other acceptable but still lower social station jobs, some owned property now3-Around the turn of the century until WW2 the Italians replaced them as the low mass migrant group but were browner so Irish became seen as White but still trashy lower tier whites4-After WW2 they got GI bills and most became middle class and some already had money. Already a huge demographic cohort so most of them jumped to middle class but only some were rich5-Kennedy elected and Irish are now considered fully American and it's weird if you think they're not white, they are already established in eastern cities and many become upper middle class6-Now many Irish have generational wealth, their embedded communities have had money and education for years now and are considered soulful normal AmericansItalians are near at step 5 now and the Italian replacement, Mexicans are moving from step 2 to 3 currently if you want reference.

The concept of White in the US back was silly but had some reality behind it in regards to demography of the time. Whites were considered to be North Western European Protestants. White Catholics were almost White. The light colored eyes and hair thing was just a convenient overlap developed post 1900 to legitimize many who didn't fit that strict previous definition like Eastern Europeans and Southern Europeans, many of whom were Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish or other non-standard groups. The US was unironically racially homogenous in the White population until the civil war for the most part. In the 1860s Germans and Irish were still considered "not white" by many. It's dumb and static, but still a relevant metric to bring up in these discussions.
