What Europe/Caucasian ethnicity is the backbone of the American South? I'm a Yankee, I live in the north and all my knowledge of the south comes from entertainment media like movies and games. I've always been interested in the south and southern white women are really hot. In the north it's mostly dominated by the Italians and Irish and Jews but what about the south? What white group is responsible for the white culture of the south? Who were the majority of plantation owners in the south? Was it the French and Spanish?
>>219827383Are you mostly talking about the rich people? The clue will be in the family plantation house/chateau names. Many of them have general British, French or Norman names. People with names like Smith, Madison, Williams, Harrison etc will be English.Scottish & Scots-Irish are names like Hamilton, Montgomery, Campbell, Calhoun, Cunningham etc.French will obviously be names like Beauregard, Legaré, Duvall, Montreuil. Norman are like Taylor, Leonard, Darcy, Beaumont etc.

>>219827383Southern whites are mostly British (English, Scottish, Scots Irish in the hills, and sometimes Welsh). Most white southerners are old stock Americans because the large waves of European immigration largely skipped the south. Sometimes you get Germans here and there. A little known fact is that German immigrants pre-1800s often followed the same pattern of migration in the south as the Scots Irish. They often lived in the same areas but there were far fewer of them. Some German migration came later in some places so cities like Nashville, Tennessee have a neighborhood called Germantown, but again these were drops in the bucket overall. An important note: Scots Irish doesn’t mean Gaelic speaking Catholics fleeing famine. They were Presbyterian Scottish and English planters in Ireland that migrated to America in the late 1600s and 1700s. Many lower class people would have been Scots Irish squatting on some plot in the hills. Plantation owners were descendants of the first people to show up, survive, and get huge tracts of land. Thus, they were mostly English. Sometimes they we’re aristocratic, but you didn’t need to be anyone special to get large plots of land at first.
