What happens in maryland? What happens in the peninsula in the west? Is the part near delaware like that one fallout 3 DLC?
>>219838685>What happens in maryland?dc and baltimore>What happens in the peninsula in the west? tax haven, beach houses and towns, hampton roads military>Is the part near delaware like that one fallout 3 DLC?no, but the panhandle into west virginia is
>>219838685Maryland isnt real, it's a psyop we tell foreigners so they dont find out about our international adrenachrome harvesting plants that we pump into all of our fast food internationally in order to brainwashed the world to cut their cocks off.
>>219838685I live in Maryland. It's a different vibe depending on the area. We have great crabs and other seafood>DC suburbs Some of the wealthiest, most educated places in the USA, though there's a few sketchy spots in PG County. >AnnapolisBeautiful little city that looks like an English seaside town>BaltimoreHas poverty and drug issues but also some really nice areas and a fantastic arts scene.>Western MD (the panhandle) Mini Appalachia. A little less remote or destitute than West Virginia.>Southern MDCommuters to DC>along the bayBeautiful landcapes and great seafood. It's a popular area for tourists.>Is the part near delaware like that one fallout 3 DLC?I live here. The whole Eastern shore is a little poorer than the rest of the state, if that's what you mean. It's popular for retirees because it's cheaper and quieter and the cost of living is lower than across the bay. There are issues with environmental sustainability and some residents are loath to see anything change, meaning parts of the shore are changing and improving more slowly than others. If you're still here, ask me anything and I'll answer as much as I can
>>219840823Would you say the state has a unique local culture, or does it generally overlaps with the neighboring states? How prevelant was slavery back in the day? Afaik it was a slave state, but didnt secede, how come?
>>219841234To add to the first question, would most people actively identify themselves as marylanders, or is it just the subdivision they happen to live in, and they wouldnt mind if it was all merged with a neighboring state tomorrow?
>>219841234We do. It's a balance of north and south. We consider ourselves Marylanders. Lived there my whole life. The area east of the bay has a southern Tidewater culture. Southern accents too.The middle of the state around DC is rich and full of Glowies of all kinds as, well as big pharma people. I think the govt and the pharmaceutical companies employ like a third of the people here. That's how it feels. The western peninsula is extremely poor and more like West Virginia. I live there. It's getting less poor as the DC suburbs creep up towards Appalachia. We are a unique mix of northern and southern. Some southern colloquialisms are used and our food feels more southern. It's not totally a southern state either. I see confederate flags a sometimes but it's still a mixed bag. We were going to join the 'federacy during the civil war but the secret service captured our state legislature at gunpoint. Maryland was also a safe haven for Catholics during the colonial days. I think that has something to do with the name being 'Mary'land. There's also a ton ofBlack People, like a third of the state isBlack.
>>219841569Neat, thanks for the info
>>219841234There's definitely a state culture despite some overlap with the surrounding areas. The DC suburbs have a lot in common with DC and Northern Virginia for example. Crab feasts, Old Bay (a savory, peppery spice mix), and the Maryland flag are kinda popular symbols. >>219841295>To add to the first question, would most people actively identify themselves as marylanders, or is it just the subdivision they happen to live in, and they wouldnt mind if it was all merged with a neighboring state tomorrow? It kinda depends. People generally identify themselves as Marylanders but some subgroups (like old timers in the coastal areas) don't identify much with people from other parts in the state, like Baltimore. Western Maryland has people who advocate for secession from the state, though it's not likely to happen anytime soon. Some of the Eastern counties would appreciate Delaware's lack of sales tax but I imagine they'd change their minds when they learn how crappy Delaware public schools are lol.>How prevelant was slavery back in the day? Afaik it was a slave state, but didnt secede, how come?Yeah it was a slave state. Slavery was pretty big. We weren't a cotton state like Mississippi but farms, workshops, shipyards, etc still used a lot of slave labor even as some slaves gained freedom from manumission. Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman were both from the Eastern Shore. There are statues and other tributes to them there.>but didnt secede, how come? There was a lot of Confederate sympathy but Lincoln knew that losing the state would mean DC would be surrounded. He had the Confederate sympathizers in the legislature arrested and detained in a fort. Some suspected Confederates along with POWs were also held in a prison camp in the Southern part of the state. It's called Point Lookout, and it's allegedly haunted.
>>219838685the chesapeake ripper
>delawarepeaceful place but a shithole. granted, i only really stayed near wilmington
>>219842008That explains it lol. Wilmington is like mini Philadephia.
>>219841569Which part of the state are you from?
>>219838685is it still a hive of popish knavery?
Why do you all keep mentioning a western peninsula? We ain't got no damn western peninsula. We have a panhandle, which everyone just refers to as western Maryland. The eastern half, which we just call the eastern shore, is a peninsula, the Delmarva peninsula to be exact.>>219841234>How prevelant was slavery back in the day? Afaik it was a slave state, but didnt secede, how come?Very, lots of southern/confederate shit here that has slowly faded or been removed through recent years. Our state song was a confederate song but we go rid of it, and we removed a bunch of statues of confederate generals, the klan was here, but was famously dismantled by a affable black man. The state didn't secede because Lincoln held the Baltimore and Annapolis hostage. We still have one of the canons pointed toward the Baltimore harbor. He also arrested a bunch of confederate sympathizers and rabble rousers and jailed them without trials. This is one of the wealthiest most educated states. It's pretty nice living hear, yes even in Baltimore (which has made great improvements), lots of good food, people are nice, the trendy parts of the city are fun, and we've got a grungy art scene. It's perfectly situated, we have small mountains/Appalachia, large cities, plenty of farm land, all the fucking water you'd ever want, rivers, ocean, our eastern shore is pretty and fun to explore, we have wild horses that live on beaches. You can get to DC, Philadelphia, and NYC very quickly. I've taken day trips to NYC more than a few times. The other anon is correct in that it's a blend of the north and south. It's also decently diverse, majority white state, all the black folk basically live in and between Baltimore and DC, I think most of our Latinos are Mexican and our Asians are Korean, so lots of good Korean and Mexican food and markets, between seafood and soul food. We desperately need better public transportation, we were working on it, but then Trump got reelected, everything can't be perfect.
>>219842443>We desperately need better public transportationA decent bus service over the bay bridge and on the shore would solve a lot of problems.
Interesting thread
>>219842410It was majority Protestant a century before the War of Independence already because of settlers from other colonies moving in, they passed early laws mandating religious freedom because otherwise the Catholics would’ve ended up outnumbered and oppressed in their own colony they founded
>>219838685West is Appalachia. North is basically Pennsylvania. Eastern Shore is basically Delaware. Southern MD is basically Virginia. Baltimore has its reputation for a reason but its still a cool city with some good history and culture there. Just like any other major city it has its good parts and bad parts. The DC suburbs in Maryland are kinda weird. Montgomery County is very affluent and dense near DC then gets more suburban as you spread out. Prince Georges County is niggerhell. Also, as a Virginian I think the road pathways in Maryland are designed very weirdly and unintuitively, and the drivers there are insane. Two different times i've hit a car that was trying to turn left in front of me from the center lane while I was in the left lane, both times they were Maryland drivers.
>>219845756>the drivers there are insane. Two different times i've hit a car that was trying to turn left in front of me from the center lane while I was in the left lane, both times they were Maryland drivers.I live on the Eastern Shore, which has a reputation for being stricter with traffic offenses. People are still really reckless. People usually go 10mph over the limit on the highway and are always trying to pass me in no-pass zones. On weekend nights and holidays there are so many drunks that police can't catch them all. The court records are full of people driving like 30mph over the limit, including a circuit court judge lmao
