It's pretty fucked up that there are posters here who only know one language.
Feels like I'm potentially communicating with Neanderthals.
Learn another language for fun EFL Anons, it doesnt matter how niche and irrelevant it is. Just learn something and immerse yourself in the culture. It will improve your mind a lot.

Not learning that subhuman language either.

Why do ESL niggas pretend that they would still speak multiple languages, if their mother tongue wasn't the global lingua franca instead? Do you honestly take us for fools?

I learn other languages for fun, but let’s not pretend it’s anything more than a niche hobby. Learning another language isn’t serious when you already speak English.
>>
>>219844763
>>219844773
I speak three languages already
So pretty likely I would
But aside from that learning another language contributes very beneficially to neuroplasticity. And more importantly recognizing your place in the world and not just seeing other cultures as disposable subhumans

it's a sign of low IQ
intelligent people are naturally drawn to learning other languages

I genuinely don't know what you mean by serious. There are Americans learning Chinese fluently and moving to China to make their living there. Are they not serious? It's just a weird way to put it. It's as serious as you make it, if you want to live small you don't need to learn anything and go anywhere.

>Trying to immerse yourself in a different language as an EFL
>TV shows are subbed in English
>Webpages auto translate to English
>Talk to native speaker: oh you're from england, let's continue this conversation in english
Trying to find the motivation to spend like an hour a day learning another language is virtually impossible unless you live in the respective country
>>
>>219844915
Just turn off the subtitles and auto-translate. Change your phone's and OS language to the designated language. Insist on speaking whatever language you want to learn. With all due respect your problems are easily solvable opportunities to do a deeper dive into the language you want to learn. You're just looking for excuses at this point.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to learn another language. In fact, I think it's a great thing and would encourage anyone to do it. My point is that there's a STRONG incentive to speak English in the modern world, that goes beyond all the other points you mentioned. Let's not pretend the percentage of Russians and Brazilians who can converse in English wouldn't fall off a cliff, if Russian or Portuguese occupied the same position that English does in our modern world. This has nothing to do with linguistic chauvinism and everything to do with practicality.

Ok but why?
>>
>>219845009
Ok and? That puts you at an intellectual and humanitarian disadvantage if anything.

Why what? Why learn another language?
Because there is actual evidence it makes you a better person

I could also spend that time learning an instrument, volunteering, exercising, developing a skill, doing extra hours at work or about a million other things with more practical application

I learned Spanish against my will with all the o algo memes.

You could. And a lot of that stuff is potentially addmirable. But when it comes to neuropalsticity learning a musical instrument is the closest you're gonna get if you aren't learning a language. But like you do you and whatever is relevant I guess.

You can't learn another language "for fun", it won't stick in your brain. Everyone here speaks English because the world is a small place without that knowledge, and if they know another language besides that and their native one, it's because it was forced upon them.
>>
>>219845725
other languages are perfectly learnable if they have enough media to immerse in comfortably.
>>
>"Fucking English speakers. They never learn another language."
>"Lol look at the English speaker trying to learn another language. What an idiot."
You'll bitch either way. Just put your head between your legs and vanish down your own dick hole.

>You can't learn another language "for fun"
What a strange thing to say
>and if they know another language besides that and their native one, it's because it was forced upon them
Stranger still
There are people on /int/ that speak 3+ languages because they enjoy learning them. I have friends in real life that speak 5+ languages at native and near native level. Anything you put your mind to will stick in your brain dude. Don't sell yourself short.
As someone who lives internationally what you said id a very weird post to process entirely detached from reality. And these multilingual guys I know aren't even particularly smart so it's weird that you think of it as some unattainable threshold.

No, "something" in Italian is qualcosa.
