They whine about being a territory of the USA that can't vote in American elections. Then in the referendums they vote against BOTH independence AND being granted statehood. It seems like they just want to complain about America, rather than self-reflect and actually fix anything (like most latinxs).
>>
The FBI o algo subverts their elections i think idk the young lords threw a hissy fit about it back in the 20th century.

Being a territory puts them in a sweet spot
they become independent they get cut off from the U.S. economy and federal welfare. If they become a state, they'll have to raise their own state taxes, and pay federal taxes on everything. Lots of left leaning voters want them to have statehood, thinking they'd elect democrat congressmen, but Puerto Rico could easily swing right, especially if they feel like they are getting pinched economically. It's better if Washington DC becomes a city state.

Then why do they bitch about being an American territory then?

Also, DC was specifically designed to be "neutral" territory rather than part of a State or a State itself.

It's fun.

civics 101 anon
no taxation without representation in congress (or ability to vote)
they do pay taxes to the federal government
they get no votes in any federal elections and congress
but the president and congress still has complete control over the territory
even though they still get all of the same type of federal welfare as all other Americans, the amount they get is less than what states get
They didn't think DC would become as populated as it is. Almost a million people live there with no representation.

DC is literally meant to be neutral Federal territory, not a State. If you don't like that, don't live there. DC being so large is more of a sign of how monstrously large our government has gotten. Also, they get electoral votes already, and Shadow Senators.

Oh, and by the way, they do have representation, again via electoral college votes, and they HAVE A MAYOR like anyone else who lives in a city gets to elect to represent their interests.

Anon the federal government should have less power over DC. People have been living there since the city was built, you realize people just don't up and leave their homes? Wars and near apocalyptic natural disasters don't displace people, they stay and rebuild. Why should DC residents, who built the city up, who've been living there for generations just up and leave? Ripping your whole family up to move to another state is not easy or cheap or fair. Voters in Vermont and Wyoming have more power than DC voters and there are less people in those states. The electoral college is a fucking joke lol, that's not representation in how the land is governed, people want say in what laws are enacted over their lives, electoral votes don't give that. All signs point to DC having statehood, founding fathers designed our government to be malleable to change with times and for the will of the people to be reflected, "traditionalist" or people who believe in "originalism" is one of the reasons why our country has been regressing and lagging behind the rest of the developed world.

Sure, the government is designed to be changed, and DC can get statehood through a legal process. Except, the country doesn't want it to happen so the process to make it one won't happen. If you can convince 2/3rds of the country to vote for DC to be a state then it will be, but that'll never happen, and in my view, that's a good thing. I don't want a state with senators who's entire economy is based on taking the rest of the country's money and spending it on government jobs, that'll just lead to more and more and more expansion of the overpaid bureaucracy, an entire state's goal will be to do that if DC becomes a state.
>>

It's not really up to the rest of the country per se. It's not 2/3rds of congressional votes, it's a simple majority vote, meaning they get granted statehood and admitted to the union with a single vote each in the house and senate. That's super easy to achieve, they nearly did it a few years ago. Have you ever been to Washington DC? It's a proper city, it has private sector jobs and local businesses and communities that are not connected to the federal government. They won't be taking in more money and spending ti on government jobs, we know this because of how the states surrounding DC function. It's also not how budgeting works in congress. And out politicians don't always vote along party lines.
>>

All those local businesses are dependent upon the higher earners of which their money comes form either direct government work, or lobbying, or government contracts dude, be real. It is the richest area per capita and that is SOLELY due to people grifting tax money.

You can make that argument about any economic hub/city in this country anon. That's just what happens when people gather in one place. Government contractors, multi billion dollar businesses that rely on federal aid and contracts, are every where in this country not just in Washington. DC citizens pay taxes too, they are simply getting some of the money back. There is corruption, people are greedy, but not as much as you are thinking anon. Also DC is blue as fuck, democrat politicians are 100 times less corrupt and greedy than republicans, it's not even a contest. Republican are almost always the politicians that are stealing money from tax payers, rigging the stock market, and awarding government contracts to their family, friends, and shell companies. Kristi Noem literally just got caught doing that shit. My state had a republican governor who won by fluke and we are still suffering from all of the cooked shit he did while in office, lacing his pockets with our tax dollars. We don't deal with government inefficiency when we have democrats running the show. That stupid Doge shit, Trump and Elon pulled, they tried to find theft and misplaced government funding within our welfare system but couldn't because there simply was none. Stop falling for the lie that our federal government doesn't work and has no oversight.

I don’t like Puerto Rico because all their Latinas are overweight and unattractive
>>
>>219847852
It's almost as if the people who want to be a US state and the people that vote against it in the referedum are not the same.

Kick em out like the rest of the latinos you can forcefully give a country independence and some how it will work out
