i just read that musicology is considered a women's field in russia. in soviet times, cultural studies were funded as last priority, so it paid too little to attract men in the first place. it carried over to the present day
russian musicology hasn't really taken off internationally speaking, so i think there is still room to become a professional, especially if you can translate
