I make bangers and mash from scratch every now and again but that's because there's only a few components. I can't be arsed making anything involving pastry, and I can't be arsed making anything where I need to multitask more than two things at a time. Another issue, which I think is influenced by the whole war time rationing thing, is that a lot of generational family recipes and cooking habits probably got wiped out. I don't know anyone else in my life other than my auntie who makes pies from scratch, for example, and I'm sure if you went back a hundred years, most families would know how to make their own pies.
