Nah it was Jones
>In 1950, Jones and his wife moved to Indianapolis. Without formal training or ordination, he took on a pastorate in the Methodist church there at the age of only nineteen. He espoused liberal views on civil rights and actively campaigned for racial integration. Conservatives within the church reacted with hostility – including the throwing of dead animals into the church.

Yes. He ran one of the first mixed race churches in Indiana and was the first couple to adopt a black child in that state. He got his city's police dept to desegregate and ran undercover ops to uncover restaurants which refused to serve black people and protested until they changed. Most of the black people who joined his congregation during this time stayed with him until the end, until this pos convinced them to drink the cool aid. He was the first person to fight for them and made them feel welcome so they trusted him. It's really sad.

Matyrmade podcast has a really good series about his life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZA32LPtksA&list=PLKv2oZZiOAKXv1zBlPG7oDoz1WHU0FZTd&index=7

What's with this new online sectarian war from the 1500s, are you all third worlders? Nobody in civilised countries cares about this religion shit anymore, it's crazy to still be fighting over this lmao

Because the catholic church tolerates much more racism than it lets on. In the 1940s and 50s the San Francisco Archdiocese was, like all catholic church operations worldwide to that point, run by Italians. The clergy will never admit it but every nun, monk and priest working for the church knew not to trust browns and there aren't many black catholics to begin with, so why would a black american go to the SF catholic church. Also, catholicism was still in latin at this point, so black americans wouldn't be able to understand anything anyway.

Jim Jones' appeal was that he was a normal white American, who spoke english, and didn't judge people on his race. Especially early on, Jones' largest draw was that he was NOT a racist, but still southern enough to be trusted. His sermons were approachable and friendly. Many people came to jesus through him. This gave him enormous power over people, which went to his head, and is when the People's Temple was gradually transformed into a true cult.

Which is ironic because had Jim stayed in the US, he probably would have gotten another PT officer elected into the SF City govt and legalized the theft he was accused of. This would have avoided him having to go to Brazil, the original plan was for a smaller normal cult compound outside Foresthill where my parents lived. The non-crazy Peoples' Templars ultimately moved into the lot and have been our neighbors for about sixty years now.

side note: Foresthill was EXTREMELY /pol/ tier racist then and the city power, phone and water companies didn't want to provide service to nonwhites and because of this all the catholics had their own side of town and blacks were bussed back to Sacramento
