no those are two separate languages you're just confusing them because most ukranians speak russian primarily.

I've seen the Ukrainians at work, whenever they think someone else speaks their language they always ask them if they speak rusky. I don't even know how they say Ukrainian.

Until 2014 ALL of their television was in Russian. And that can give you the sliver of the picture

kind of like if you come across 2 french people they'll typically speak arabic between then but there's also the french language in some regions.

i remember listening to a news story a while ago interviewing a ukrainian doctor who admitted doctors don't speak ukrainian and look down on those who do as lowering themselves to a peasant tongue but this one brave guy was going to change it all
struck me as absolutely ridiculous even coming from our failed attempt at all things language revival, nobody here would look down upon the language.
