i was never taught that the Germans managed to hold on to Norway (and also Denmark, but that was far easier to get to) until basically the war ended.

from the very basic research i have conducted, apparently hundreds of thousands of men were stationed there since the Germans suspected that the Atlantic Wall would first be breached there instead of France. it also was the staging point for the likely residual amount of u-boats by then, and they still wanted to retain control of the iron ore production. very fascinating. i wonder if they ever considered an evacuation there.
