I read essays frequently and learned to filter out what makes a trash essay or a good one, the same principle translates to video content 1 to 1. If they have no clear thesis or focus too heavily on controversy/polemics then it's never worth watching. I saw a rather good essay about the transition from cel animation to digital in the 90s and terrible ones usually are trying to defend some shitty media series, producing idle commentary, or sometimes even magnifying some controversy that almost no one cares about.
