When I was young, I thought that Poland was a Jewish country where everybody followed Judaism, and that Hitler had invaded them so he could capture all the Jews there. I didn't learn otherwise until I played Europa Universalis 3 when I was 13 years old, and noticed that Poland was listed as a Catholic country with all of its provinces as Catholic.

I don't know, but you know all the countries you learned about in world history class? We only talked about them in the context of a thousand years ago, so it was just weird "discovering" that places like Egypt 1) still existed and 2) are modern.

There is a fairytale about a lady called Frau Holle who lives in the sky, and when she shakes out her bed, the feathers falling down on earth are what we perceive as snow. Naturally, I thought the place where she lives must be called Holland. So my assumption was that Holland is in the sky and that there had to be a giant bridge somewhere far away (I never saw it after all, so it could not be close by) leading into the sky, because you do occasionally see Dutch cars on the road. I also thought when you go to the other side of the Alps, you end up in Africa, but this one actually turned out true.

I thought that Antarctica belonged to some European power that colonized it long ago, probably the UK; and that there were people living there permanently; like Greenland but not an independent country.
