>>220327052Can't speak for Kazakhstan but for what is now the Algerian sahara it was never fully under any sort of proper centralised state authority before the French but rather numerous tribal confederations both sedentary in the oases and nomadic throughout the desert. All the precursor states to modern Algeria (Numidia, Zayyanids/Tlemcen, Hafsids, Regency) covered the mediterranean coast and high plains and maybe sometimes certain northern oases but never the deep sahara. Even under the French the Sahara was under a different administrative category, it was a military colony focused on resource extraction while the north was integrated as a part of metropolitan France. An initial proposal for peace by france during the revolution was for algeria to have the north but they kept the south which was refused.Keeping the sahara was during the independence struggle because it provided the basis for economic sovereignty with all the resources and so on which is why Algeria is so massive now. The alternative is spreading your cheeks for the west like Morocco does so good going.
