Can we talk about how weird it is that Timor-Leste exists? They were outnumbered 1/100 by Indogs yet they managed to win without any foreign backing. They have 15 official languages and their main reason for wanting independence was... ?

Not wanting to be indogs

Lol.

>hippie marches in us universities saved timor leste from indonesian oppression

Yes. Contrary to chud belief, world opinion does actually matter. Indonesia's economy was tanking and they couldn't afford to become a pariah state, and those protests had already galvanised the Western world in support of East Timor.
End result, Indonesia had to give it up to secure its economy.

Is Timor-Leste a household name in Australia? Do people know that they speak Tetum, what Fretilin is and who Xanana Gusmao is?
>>
>>220356082
>win
the reason we let them free was because the dipshit dictator who invaded them were losing public voice and stepping down from his power. we never want them anyway.
>>
>>220356414
These days no. In the 90s when Indogs were massacring them, yes.
We led the UN peacekeeping mission there.

I worked with an Australian guy who would have been at peak age when it was going down over there and he fucking hated Indonesians specifically because of this.

Only white person I've ever met in real life to express any non-Bali thoughts about Indonesia.

They had to survive among Portuguese, Japanese and Indonesian occupations. Imagine how deeply traumatized they have to be us, ukrainians and Belarusians can't compare
>>
Not wanting to be Indonesian is great motivation.

Sour grapes

I genuinely think East Timor would have been better off as part of Portugal or Brazil. Being independent right next to much larger and very different countries didn’t really work in its favor

Portuguese colony. Indonesians invaded in the 70s when it was about to become independent because "it should clearly be part of Indonesia, we don't respect arbitrary colonial borders" despite the fact that this was the opposite of argument they used to keep control of Papua.

Anyways the East Timorese didn't want to be part of Indonesia so Indonesia committed mass murder, rape, etc. against them for thirty years to keep them in line until the Cold war ended and suddenly the West, no longer worried about Indonesia turning to the USSR if they got punished, started sanctioning them. Then when the indog dictator fell the new democratic government decided it wasn't worth it and left.

Now it's a desperately poor shithole

They unironically voted to stay part of Portugal when Portugal was doing their carnation revolution or whatever, but the Portuguese government just said "no teehee that would be icky imperialism" and that's when the Indogs invaded.
Some still speak Portuguese and they're part of whatever the Portuguese language equivalent to the Commonwealth is, forget the name.
Eg.

Portugal actually still could have Cape Verde, Timor, Macau and Guinea Bissau i guess if they just wanted to keep it

>Indonesia founded as a former Dutch colony
>Timor Leste was a Portuguese colony
>Suharto, a corrupt military general, took power as Indonesia's dictator.
>Timor Leste gain independence and weak.
>Suharto to Timorese: "damn babe, I'll annex you and make you mine!"
>Suharto resign after 3 long decades as a human rights criminal and the most corrupt dictator of the time.
>Indonesia next administration to Timorese: "We're sorry, babe. You're free, now."

Meh, 15-20 years later they gonna ask to join Australia or rejoin us again anyway. They're in the brink of bankruptcy

why is the eastern tip of timor not austronesx? why is there an orange circle on sumatra?
>>
Just read about Indonesian invasion of Timor. I knew they were pedos but I didn't know they could hit rock bottom even more. Christ.
>>
>>220357917
>why is the eastern tip of timor not austronesx
That's Papuan language family
>why is there an orange circle on sumatra?
That's Rejang language
>>
>>220356743
They only kept the places filled with Portuguese desu, no idea what the colonial policy was, as in "all subjects are Portuguese", but they clearly didn't view them like that
>>
>>220356711
I initially took him for a swarthy Portuguese guy from his accent and looks, which surprised me. Not what I had in mind for someone from Timor Leste. I can’t really see why they’re not trying to get more help, I’d be concerned if I were them, especially with everything going on lately with countries invading neighbors again
>>
>>220358450
i was talking about amount of racemixing natives had to see it was probably made them rethink a few things
