I always felt as if it was more of a stepbrother rivalry where you're in a way related and like each other, but also different enough you don't see eye to eye. the EU definitely doesn't help the cause of seeing European nations as independent, unique places. this may be due to how our nation works - you mention our states and it should be the case that each state is just that - a state. unfortunately the south got booty blasted and we all fell under an oppressive federal banner that has largely crushed all individuality among states. you still have state laws and quirks / traditions that differ ofc. most normies probably transitively apply that same logic to the EU and assume every nation on the continent is participatory as well sans Britian. I run in a lot of far-right, Christian circles and when it comes to more informed groups like that they can actually delineate all these things and have more granular views of europe
