German ethnicity in America was actively suppressed during World War One. They started identifying as "white" instead of as "German". Many bilingual Germans didn't teach their kids to speak German after that. The only real exceptions to this were some very religious and culturally isolated German speakers like Amish and Ultra Orthodox Jews (although their versions of the German language are barely intelligible to a German in Germany).
