If they're doing a free food thing, then coffee is not efficient. Should be bread and thick hot soup or similar. This reeks of hispterish marketing/prosetylizing if what you say is true. I rather they sell stuff and use the profit for their church and community. That way is more sustainable and prudent use of church funds.

They did the bread and soup in the same church for the last, at least, 100 years nonstop and much longer in other places in the city

Nah, it's a catholic church charity thing, years ago when I was in college, I did some volunteer works for them (they weren't Fransican tho). What you suggested (bread + hot soup) is offered at one of their dedicated charity kitchens. However, in community café like OP's case, or in a parish hall in my case (where I did the volunteer works), simple toasts and coffee or tea are the usual offer (either free or incredibly cheap) for a few reason:
1. You need actual kitchen tools (stove, pot, etc...) for cooking hot soup, as for coffee, you just need a water boiler
2. You need someone who know basic cooking skill to not fuck up the soup, meanwhile even an useless 20 y.o me can pour hot water onto coffee powder, no skill needed
3. soup can spoil, coffee powder won't, also hygiene control in a kitchen requires higher sense of responsibility

In middle school I had a franciscan religion teacher and he was the basest man alive. Guy didn't give a shit, just told us stories of his mission to Russia and how he did dumb crap over there. And I say this despite already being an atheist back then. All the nun/priest/catechist teachers I had in other schools always seemed like uptight fake christians in comparison.

They're known for making their own food, drinks, alcohol and studying the Bible, so naturally there's not much time to be physically active. The monk I had as a teacher was fat too, so it's definitely not wrong to assume they just get that way over time due to the lifestyle.
