The current bavarian Lederhosen & Dirndl were the succesful attempt to create a symbol for the recently founded Kingdom of Bavaria in order to unify the different Franconians, Swabians and Bavarians into one state. Of note is that the forms of those clothing items itself are homogenisations of different clothings from vastly different regions - they are the lowest common denominator.

There were of course people who wore the fashion (or at least elements) of the previous times but they were either rich excentrics or poorfags who were unable to go with the time.Pic rel is a 1880s photography of a rich farmer from my region, which historically was quite poor. The hat was a century out of fashion and the ringed socks and short trousers can be traced to the 16th/17th century. Only really the coat was a contemporary item. On the other hand there were many late 19th century monarchs who sometimes dressed in 17th or 18th century costumes and ordered their staff to do so as well.
