why is Montana's in Spanish?

I could understand the southwest, Texas, or Florida being in Spanish since they used to be Spanish colonies but Montana seems odd

When I lived in New Hampshire the state motto was basically the standard retort to anyone complaining about state government services or bureaucracy.
