Their pre-modern history is pretty romanticized. Although there was a time in history where they were more culturally advanced than most parts of the world. Also them being an island nation and being so closed off created a phenomena where a lot of nations wanted to open up the box and see what was inside. Although it seems that when people tried and looked they just saw a knockoff Manchuria and didn't put much effort after. Had no unique resources or exports that mainland didn't have. Mongols tried to conquer, failed a couple times (due to sheer luck on Japan's part) and decided they had other shit to do. Portugal gave it a little try with the whole christianization thing, eventually expelled and fucked off. Dutch gave it a whirl, did a little business but didn't seem to be worth it. Naval superiority while being an island nation is a hell of a thing though. Let them develop in a unique way. British isles were looted and sacked constantly and Japan remained mostly intact throughout time.
