I kind of like the quasi-nationalism for it, they do this now for things like manufacturing output too now. Like if I look up highest manufacturing output per country the EU will take their member stats and put their output above the US and just slightly behind China. They tried this for the Olympics too where they show how many medals the EU would have had if they were a federation.
