I guess it's about covering the company's ass. I sat down with my supervisor and he walked me through 3 hours of online modules. Then we went out on the floor for the practical part of the program. I already knew what I was doing so he didn't bother to show me anything, just gave me a short list of tasks to do while he watched and graded me. Certification is kind of dumb, and a bit of a scam. Maybe it's good to go over a few safety points, but really you don't learn how to operate that machine until you are out on the job site working with it.
