Did you know that Mahabharata is so entrenched in Indonesia? Even other SEA countries preferred Ramayana

Any recs on a good version to read? I understand the ramayana and mahabharata are really long so I'd probably have to read an abridged version.
Or I could read sections of the original sanskrit? I would be fine with translating word for word.

Based thb. Why do the other SEAs prefer the Ramayana? Don't get me wrong, it's great and a more romantic story of heroism but the Mahabharata is a much more interesting and darker tale.

You'll feel lost if you read a translation. It is very dense and has pages and pages of digressions at a time. Read an adaptation and familiarize yourself with the basic story first and then dive in to a translation if you want to go deeper. William Bucks adaptation is very well told for people who are unfamiliar. It's in full here:
