I just ghosted everybody and stayed home and haven't spoken to anyone from high school since.

No proms for high school. However, there is a tradition for final sem uni students to have one, usually organised by the next younger batch. As Malaysian students come from different states that are often far apart, it is the last opportunity to confesscyour love to someone before they graduate and go back to their hometowns. Typically, the prom (Majlis Perpisahan/Farewell Ceremony) is done at swanky hotel ballroons or rented wedding venues with full catering. Lecturers are also usually invited. There will be speeches, performances by juniors and then eating. After that, the graduating seniors are left alone to confess with their bf/gf. I actually proposed to my wife at my prom. Honestly, it is the best time to propose, since you have finished studying and embarking on a career. The girl's parents would also be happy she snagged an educated husband

No such thing in my school. Since most of us were already 18, we went out to a club to get shitfaced with the tearchers.
