My obsession with English pronunciation kept me from learning languages to avoid "phonetic interference". But I gave up (for real) on sounding natural in English, so I am ACTUALLY open to learning foreign languages now!I've pondered it long enough to actually want to do it now. It's going to be my cope and refuge from life's ups and downs.Which languages should I learn? (Exclude South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern languages, keep it exclusively European/Slavic).

>>220932886Don't be mean about them. I've noticed something similar among Americans as well, though to a lesser extent. Anyways, what I meant more specifically was the fear of disagreeing, taking differing opinions as a personal attack (which is why I mentioned “no offense” earlier, just so we're clear), a strong emphasis on hierarchy, and submission to authority, not necessarily based on the arguments, but rather on, idk, social status and stereotypes. You can find all of this in any population; it’s just that I’ve always associated these things more with Asia, where this kind of mindset seems to be more common, and Western Europe with egalitarianism and a more laid-back attitude. Maybe it's just my cognitive dissonance, maybe I have bad luck to people and my observations are worthless or maybe I'm just incompatible. I don't want to start any arguments. It's not that I have anything against arguing, but this isn't the place for it. Anyways, Polish germanophiles are much worse in every metric, I've mentioned this some time ago

Today I finish the HSK3 vocabulary and I start with HSK4. Exciting.I'm very busy with other daily obligations so I've mostly only been doing my daily Anki. 20 new cards a day. I'm not checking any grammar explanations, nor reading as much in DuChinese (graded readers). But when I do I already feel like HSK3-level stories are fairly easy. I wonder how difficult it'd be for me to tackle the HSK4 exam in October.
Thoughts on this guy?https://www.tiktok.com/@shiyoje/video/7514416185807523094Ngl this dude's french is really good for someone that has learned the language for 8 months. Almost suspiciously good. Especially since he already speaks slang and mimics the intonations of gen z french people which is really hard to learn from format french that you'd learn at the beginning. He claims he learned the language for 5 hours a day during the first two months, then 3 hours a day for the remaining months. I simply don't believe this is possible to reach this level with only 3 hours a day. what do you boys think? Skill issue on my part?
>>220941930I haven't clicked the link, but I know that social media is filled with grifters who lie about how long they spent learning their TL in order to sell some kind of product.

Man, it just continues, this time hitting me with "ostealgically" (an impressive zero hits on Google): >Hah, good catch—that was a typo‑collision. I meant:>>“osteologically dense”>or really just “bone‑like / structurally heavy” as a metaphor>>But even “osteologically” is over‑engineered here; what I was going for is:>>“dense, like a solid rather than soft.”>>So you’re right to call it out—it was a brain‑slip trying to sound clever and failing.I think after a certain context size/length it just wigs out. Couple dozen more messages and it would probably sound like a J. G. Ballard fever dream.

>>220948347I'm starting to think boring readers for learners is a problem with a lot of languages. Meanwhile Japanese had a bunch of amazing content based l on things like traditional folk tales and history and adapted short stories from known writers which were both genuinely interesting and thought a lot of cultural context and references. Meanwhile the stuff in French I've encountered is incredibly dull. Thankfully the language is so simple for an English speaker that picking up something like Asterix doesn't require much study.

>>220949887There are actually adapted versions of the classics in French, but I think they are made for teens, not language learners. I'm a bit past that stage but I'm sure you can find them. That being said, I think you are better served reading any modern author, provided you are at least low B2 and willing to look up a word or two. The grammar is a bit easier and the style more direct and succinct. I don't really read popslop but all of the english garbage should have a french translation which could be of great use.

You always make these TLs way fancier than the original.>Vor dem Schneiden sollte man das Gemüse immer spülen. The English original (OE) is not advice (ought) but an imperative (do):>Wasch das Gemüse bevor du es schneidest.Genuinely a mistake.>Gewürziges Essen dieser Art haben wir noch nie im Leben ausprobiert.*ScharfesI'd just say 'Wir haben noch nie zuvor solch scharfes Essen probiert.'.>Wenn man nicht [...].I know you get off from sprucing these up 'cause they're 2ez4u but c'mon ...>Sofern man den Eintopf nicht ständig umrührt, wird er am Boden der Pfanne (who TF makes stew in a pan?) festkleben.>Seit ihrer Rückkehr vom Ausland arbeite sie fleißig dran, ihr Curry-Rezept zu vervollkommnen.Weder der Hauptkoch [...] fehlenden Zutaten des Gerichts zu identifizieren.*better: 'aus dem Ausland' (or something with 'Auslandsreise') *more common: 'zu perfektionieren' *I think you'd just say 'Koch' (or maybe 'Chefkoch') *closer to EO: 'was dem Gericht fehlte'>Trotz der Tatsache, dass ich dem Rezept haargenau gefolgt habe, hat sich die Textur des Gerichts komplett anders als erwartet herausgestellt.*'gefolgt bin' (hah, got your ass for once)I'd use 'exakt' and 'wurde die Textur ganz und gar nicht wie beschrieben.'.>Einem [...] reinzuschmeißen.Did you know that the 'Sz' originated from 'ss' being written as 'fs' (well, an elongated 's'+a "normal" 's') and the two just being connected at the top?
>>220964481Also, probably more common, now that I think about it: 'die Würze richtig angepasst werden'. Changes the EO's meaning minimally but still. Also, lies. Plenty of stuff only really gets seasoned towards the end, not midway.
>>220955745It doesn't have to be interesting. What I want out of beginner CI is lots of simple understandable sentences so I can figure out how the language works, that's actually the fun part in the beginning. The less creative it tries to be, the better. It doesn't have to be a good story that makes me think or laugh, just contain lots of straightforward sentences that flow together coherently, without any sudden jumps in difficulty. What's interesting to me as a reader/consumer is not what is necessarily interesting to me as a language learner, at least in the beginning.
>>220964959i think it has stronger mnemonic value if content is charged in some waye.g you probably pick up words related to love/hate/family/sex more easily than pencil or toolbox
>>220961842>how effective is assimilso far i feel like i have made pretty good progress and i am only on chapter 30 out of 100.if you do it the way they prescribe, it's probably more effective than how it has been for me. i think they say to do 1 chapter per day, out of the 100 chapters in the book.i am trying to do 10-15 chapters per month, but i am not doing any of the exercises. i am just creating audio flash cards, listening and repeating the flash cards, and reading the texts.

>>220964481>probiertman almost went with that instead of ausprobieren. Probieren does seem more right for something like food. Ausprobieren sounds like the verb you'd use with trying out a new car.>I know you get off from sprucing these up 'cause they're 2ez4u but c'mon ...just more fun. I make more mistakes this way too which leads to more learning imo.> (who TF makes stew in a pan?)Didn't even realize the og said that; my brain must have auto corrected it to pot.>*'gefolgt bin' (hah, got your ass for once)I have brought eternal disrepute upon my familydanke wie immer für die ausführliche Rückmeldung
I'm having a moment where I really don't want to do my anki and idk why my mind is fighting me so hard.
>>220966324Yeah, 'ausprobieren' sounds (slightly) unusual in this context. No doubt a lexicon entry could elaborate on the usage differences.>just more funNot for me and my 'tism ;^(>danke wie immer für die ausführliche RückmeldungGerne, gerne. Probably not gonna stick around for good though, I really just want someone to help me with my smut translation (>>220924444) and then I'll bounce for a couple months/years again, I reckon. No luck so far though, that one Swedenon's short comment aside.

>>220967160I mean they piss off natives, too, check out this sperg REEEing about dialects (ledditor so it's a given but still):old d00t reddit d00t com/r/Unbeliebtemeinung/comments/1sqshs0/Also, if it's any consolation, I only understood half of this song, if that. The beginning is OK, him describing the early hours of the day, night transitioning to dawn, first rays of sunlight in the twilight et cetera and him waking up. But I already don't know WTF Kinettn (which I only recognized audibly due to the title) are supposed to be exactly. The "ghetto" where he lives/sleeps? No idea and I don't care to look it up either. Then something about him cleaning his something-or-other.Next he goes on about how he hasn't shaved or washed in 10 days, got rum in his pocket, goes to get breakfast and bum a cigarette and something else from people. Then something about people no longer doing something, him being unemployed, I think (Atze), and even more stuff I can't make out. Finally, he says it doesn't matter if he works or not since it's enough at least for a thin kinda soup and the rest I only got parts of. Maybe 50% was generous.
>>220950938I'm not even close to B2 since I've been doing this casually for half a year, but for now comics like Asterix are the perfect level. I'll get to classics at some point, when I'm ready. I'm not too worried about dictionary look ups, you really appreciate the trillions of loan words in English after a few years of grinding Japanese vocab.>>220967160Should have studied something like Swedish instead.
So many native people in my TL have annoying voices, but the language itself is kinda cool and doesn't always sound annoying. What causes this?
>>220966364how many reviews do you do each day?
>>220968907Swedish learners often have trouble with Scanian though, as the most widespread "non-standard" one.
