Even basketball credits individual performance and achievement in the form of double-doubles, triple-doubles etc. About the only interesting thing in soccer along these lines is the choice of formation. (4-4-2, etc).

Most Americans don't really hate soccer, but other sports like Baseball, American Football, Basketball, and Hockey are simply far more popular and the sports culture here revolves more around them. If I went to a sports bar here and struck up a conversation with a random they would probably bring up the NBA playoffs, or the NFL draft before the champions league. A lot kids here will grow up and play in youth soccer leagues, but most don't follow the sport professionally, probably because the local US teams suck (Thanks MLS) and it's harder to be super involved with a team an ocean away
Soccer has gay rules like no offsides, you can't bump people out of the way, you can't slide, etc. there's very little strategy involved it's just a test to see who can pass better. Football is interesting because you can setup formations anyway you want. you can focus on a strong center and spearhead through the middle, let them push through the center and encircle them, pass to the sides, fake strategies, etc. it's pretty cool
