Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus was born on April 30, 1946, in Solna, Sweden, at Haga Palace. He is the only child of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His father died in a plane crash in 1947 when Carl Gustaf was less than one year old, after which he became second in line to the throne behind his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf.

He spent his childhood at Haga Palace and was educated at local schools and by private tutors. In 1950 he became heir presumptive following the death of his grandfather’s other male-line heirs; when his grandfather died in 1973, Carl Gustaf succeeded as king. During his youth he underwent military training in the Swedish armed forces, studied history, political science, and economics at Uppsala University, and completed periods of service with the army, navy, and air force as is customary for Swedish royalty. He married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976; they have three children.

Jean-Baptiste (Jules) Bernadotte, a French marshal under Napoleon, was elected heir-presumptive to the childless King Charles XIII of Sweden by the Swedish Riksdag in 1810. He accepted, converted to Lutheranism, was adopted by Charles XIII (taking the name Charles John / Karl Johan) and served as crown prince and de facto regent; when Charles XIII died in 1818 Bernadotte became king (Charles XIV John), founding the House of Bernadotte that still rules Sweden.
